Passing requirement

70% general weighted average with no subject below 50%. You cannot fail any single subject even if your overall average is high.

Eligibility

Graduate of BS Mechanical Engineering from a PRC-recognized school. Must be a Filipino citizen or qualified foreign national under reciprocity agreements.

📅 Exam structure — 3 subjects across 2 days

Subject weighting verified from PRC: PIPE and MEEBES are equally the highest weighted at 35% each. MDSP carries 30%. Many students assume Machine Design is the most important subject — it is not. Plan your study time accordingly.

⚠️ Passing rule: 70% general weighted average AND no subject below 50%. Scoring 49% in MDSP disqualifies you entirely even if you ace MEEBES and PIPE. Every subject must be individually passed.

Subject weight distribution
Industrial and Power Plant Engineering (PIPE) 35%
Mathematics, Engineering Economics and Basic Engineering Sciences (MEEBES) 35%
Machine Design, Shop Practices (MDSP) 30%
Day 1 — Morning
MEEBES 35%
Engineering Mathematics (Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, Calculus, Differential Equations), Engineering Economics, Engineering Management, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Engineering Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics), Physics, Engineering Laws and Ethics (RA 8495)
Day 1 — Afternoon
PIPE 35%
Steam Power Plants, Gas Turbine Plants, Internal Combustion Engines (Diesel and Gasoline), Hydroelectric Power Plants, Nuclear Power Plants, Refrigeration Engineering, Air Conditioning and HVAC, Psychrometrics, Cogeneration Systems, Power Plant Economics and Auxiliary Systems
Day 2 — Full Day
Machine Design and Shop Practices (MDSP) 30%
Shafts and Shaft Couplings, Keys and Keyways, Spur and Helical Gears, Bevel and Worm Gears, Bearings (Journal and Anti-Friction), Springs, Belts and Chain Drives, Brakes and Clutches, Flywheels, Pressure Vessels, Bolts and Fasteners, Welded and Riveted Joints, Piping Systems, Engineering Materials and Metallurgy, Manufacturing Processes, Shop Practices and Metrology

💡 Study tips for ME board exam takers
1
PIPE and MEEBES each carry 35% — not Machine Design — plan your time accordingly

Many ME reviewees spend most of their time on Machine Design because it feels more concrete and familiar from school. But PIPE and MEEBES each carry more weight. Power plant cycle calculations, refrigeration problems, and engineering math must receive the majority of your daily review hours to maximize your general weighted average.

2
Refrigeration is the most underestimated topic in PIPE — dedicate at least 3 weeks to it

Most BSME programs cover refrigeration in just one semester, yet the ME board devotes roughly 25% of PIPE items to refrigeration cycles, HVAC load sizing, and psychrometrics. Many examinees cannot compute COP from cycle conditions under timed pressure. Drill 100 or more vapor-compression cycle problems before moving to general PIPE topics.

3
Master steam tables early — they appear in both PIPE and MEEBES problems

Steam table interpolation is not optional for ME board takers. Both Day 1 subjects reference steam properties extensively. Learn to navigate the saturated and superheated steam tables quickly under timed conditions — speed here directly translates to recovered points across both PIPE and MEEBES.

4
Machine Design formulas are many but highly predictable — build a personal formula sheet

MDSP problems follow recognizable patterns: shaft design under combined loading, gear tooth stress (Lewis equation), bearing life (L10 calculation), spring deflection, and pressure vessel wall thickness. Organize your formula sheet by component type. Under the Day 2 exam, pattern recognition beats derivation every time.

5
The February 2026 pass rate was 51.86% — this is a passable exam with structured preparation

Out of 6,294 examinees who sat for the February 2026 ME board, 3,264 passed. That is more than half. Structured reviewees who focus on PIPE cycle calculations, MEEBES fundamentals, and MDSP component formulas consistently clear the 70% threshold. The candidates who fail typically have weak PIPE performance — do not let refrigeration and power cycles be your blind spot.
